淘寶商城總裁張勇表示，并不是心血來潮改名字，而想了很久。他表示最初看到這個名字也覺得比較陌生，但是喊著喊著就習慣和熟悉了，“天貓”正是Tmall的諧音。 

域名信息查詢顯示，淘寶已經購入tianmao.com雙拼域名，不過該網站目前暫時無法訪問，業內猜測其未來有可能以此域名與tmall.com同時并用。

據阿里巴巴集團副總裁王帥透露，這一更換中文名稱舉措本來計劃于今年3月31日召開，但是由于阿里高層都比較心急，所以提前兩個月對外宣布。

張勇談及更名的初衷時表示，淘寶商城發展到今天，需要給消費者更為清楚的定位和明確的稱號，所以才推出這個品牌。他同時表示，雖然更換中文標識，但Tmall發展的宗旨和目標不會改變。

據張勇透露，Tmall今年的交易規模是2010年的3.5倍，自主訪問Tmall.com的用戶超過1000萬人。
