Lei Feng (December 18, 1940 – August 15, 1962) was a soldier of the People's Liberation Army in the People's Republic of China. Lei was characterised as a selfless and modest person who was devotedto the Communist Party and the people of China. In the campaign of "Learn from Comrade Lei Feng", initiated by Mao in 1963, Lei became a cultural icon symbolizing selflessness, modesty, and dedication; the youth of the country were encouraged to follow his example. There is a limit to one's life, but no limit to serving the people. I would devote my limited life to limitlessly serving the people. 2. If a person truly wants to study something, they can always find time. The key is whether they can budget their time in an efficient way. 3. For our life, we should be diligent and create wealth with our own hands, devoting ourselves to the liberation of human beings...That is the true happiness. 4. If you are a drop of water, do you moisten an inch of the land? If you are the first sunlight, do you illuminate the dark hours? If you are food, do you foster useful life? If you are one of the smallest screws, will you always stick with the status of your life? If you want to tell us what you are thinking, do you disseminate the most beautiful ideal day and night? When you are alive do you always remember to work hard and realize your efforts will affect future lives and let the world become more beautiful day by day? I would like to ask you, what have you brought about for the future? In our life, we should not only be spenders. 5. We should treat comrades like the breeze in spring, work hard like summer's sunshine, conquer difficulties like the autumn's bise sweeping withered leafs, and treat the enemy as ruthless as the cold winter. 6. A person for the revolutionary cause, just like a screw for a machine.

Brides are increasingly shunning summer weddings and getting married during winter instead to cut costs amid the economic gloom, figures suggest.

Register office data shows that thousands more people are tying the knot between October and March than in previous years, to save money on hosting receptions.

Companies offering wedding services are also reporting booming business as couples take advantage of prices thousands of pounds cheaper than during the peak summer months.

The number of couples getting married in winter has risen by up to 15 percent in some areas, with winter weddings now accounting for more than 30 percent of all marriages in Britain.

The trend is even said to be having an impact on wedding attire, with more designers offering coats, shawls and different coloured dresses from the traditional white and ivory gowns bought by most brides.

Belinda Hanks, editor of Confetti, the online bridal store and magazine, said: “One of the main factors behind this has been pressure on budgets.

“With the economy the way it is, couples are realising that if they go for a winter wedding they can get a much better deal.”

“You can shave down your budget by around a quarter if you marry in winter through savings on venue hire and catering – you’re talking about thousands of pounds.

“This has been a growing trend over the last couple of years.”

The site has seen a 25 percent rise in the number of brides preparing for winter weddings.

According to the most up to date marriage data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) the number of marriages in the winter months has increased by around seven percent in two years.

In 2006 there were 25,880 marriages in the March quarter and 41,150 in the December quarter. This rose to 27,610 and 44,015 respectively for the same three-month periods in 2008.

More recent figures from local authorities suggests that the trend has continued to accelerate with thousands more weddings scheduled for the next three months.

A "clear majority" of students profiled failed to voluntarily avoid their gadgets for one full day. Withdrawalsymptoms experienced by young people deprived of gadgets and technology is compared to those felt by drug addicts or smokers going “cold turkey”, a study has concluded. Researchers found nearly four in five students had significant mental and physical distress, panic, confusion and extreme isolation when forced to unplugfrom technology for an entire day. They found college students at campuses across the globe admitted being “addicted” to modern technology such as mobile phones, laptops and television as well as social networking such as Facebook and Twitter. A “clear majority" of almost 1,000 university students, interviewed at 12 campuses in 10 countries, including Britain, America and China, were unable to voluntarily avoid their gadgets for one full day, they concluded. The University of Maryland research described students’ thoughts in vivid detail, in which they admit to cravings, anxiety attacks and depression when forced to abstain fromusing media. One unnamed American college student told of their overwhelming cravings, which they confessed was similar to “itching like a crackhead(crack cocaine addict)”. The study concluded that “most students... failed to go the full 24 hours without media”. The research, titled The World Unplugged, also found students used “virtually the same words to describe their reactions”. These included emotions such as fretful, confused, anxious, irritable, insecure, nervous, restless, crazy, addicted, panicked, jealous, angry, lonely, dependent, depressed, jittery and paranoid. Prof Susan Moeller, who led the research, said technology had changed the students’ relationships. "Students talked about how scary it was, how addicted they were,” she said. "They expected the frustration. But they didn't expect to have the psychological effects, to be lonely, to be panicked, the anxiety, literally heart palpitations. “Technology provides the social network for young people today and they have spent their entire lives being ‘plugged in’.”

Vocabulary: withdrawal: the period of time when somebody is getting used to not taking a drug that they have become dependent on, and the unpleasant effects of doing this(戒毒過程;脫癮過程) cold turkey: the unpleasant state that drug addicts experience when they suddenly stop taking a drug; a way of treating drug addicts that makes them experience this state (吸毒成癮者)突然戒毒時的痛苦;(治療吸毒成癮者的)突然戒毒方法 unplug: to remove the plug of a piece of electrical equipment from the electricity supply(拔掉……的電源插頭) craving: a strong desire for something(強烈的願望;渴望;熱望) abstain from: to decide not to do something, especially something you like or enjoy, because it is bad for your health or considered morally wrong(戒絕) crackhead: a person who uses the illegal drug crack(強效純可卡因癮君子) paranoid: afraid or suspicious of other people and believing that they are trying to harm you, in a way that is not reasonable(多疑的;恐懼的;偏執的) heart palpitation: 心悸

The oldest female athlete at the World Masters Games in Sydney has broken a world record in the shot put -- at the age of 100. All eyes were on Ruth Frith, from Brisbane, as she arrived for day two of the World Masters Games, hoping to win gold in the shot put and feeling pretty confident as she was the only competitor in the over-100s category. But her 4.07 metre (13 ft 4.2 in) throw on Sunday didn't just win her gold, but also broke a world record. "As long as I didn't foul I was going to win it," Frith told reporters. The great-grandmother is also a keen hammer and javelin thrower and believes other pensioners should follow her example. Frith trains five days a week, regularly lifting 35 kg (77 lb) weights. She doesn't drink or smoke and she doesn't eat vegetables either, claiming she hasn't liked them since she was young. Frith was clearly a star of the World Masters Games -- an event which attracts about 28,000 athletes -- and despite her age, said she has no plans to retire just yet. She contested her first World Masters Athletics Championships at the age of 74. The World Masters Games have been held every four years since they began in Toronto in 1985, according to their website (www.2009worldmasters.com) Open to people of all abilities and most ages, the games are the world's largest multi-sport event, attracting twice as many competitors than the Olympic Games, the website said. The main difference between the World Masters Games and the Olympic Games is that World Masters are open to people of all abilities rather than just elite athletes, with the emphasis on participation, the website added.

請看《中國日報》報道: "We believe it is highly likely that portfolio investment in Expo-related stocks during the countdown period - from Jan 21 to April 30 - will generate strong investment returns," Shanghai Securities analyst Tu Jun said.

Practice makes perfect – at least, that’s what organizers of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo hope. Last Tuesday, the Expo Garden opened on a trial basis for six days so that operational problems could be fixed in time for its official grand opening. A total of 1.1 million visitors showed up during the trail run. But more than 70 million guests are expected to visit the Expo between May 1 and October 31. Shanghai is expected to set a new Expo record for most attendance. However, the public’s excitement is putting pressure on organizers. Pedestrian management has become a major issue. Organizers are now scrambling to address it. It was common for visitors to line up for hours just to get inside some of the most popular pavilions. During the first days of the trial run, surging crowds even caused the temporary closure of several pavilions, according to China Daily. On Tuesday, the first day of trial operations, chaos was reported when reservation machines malfunctioned and opening times for some pavilions were changed. The organizers are now trying out using volunteers to help ensure reservations are made smoothly. The reservation service will be used to save visitors time, but guests will only be allowed to schedule one visit among the China Pavilion and the five theme parks. Visitors can schedule a total of five visits to all of the other pavilions. For those pavilions at which they have not made a reservation, visitors must wait in line for entry. Transportation to and from the Expo was also monitored during the trial run. The Shanghai Evening Post reported that over 60 percent of visitors took the subway to get to Expo Garden. Although 42 special bus routes were set, few visitors chose to use them. Organizers are now encouraging visitors to take advantage of the buses when they attend the Expo. The Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination has also announced that only visitors with specially marked tickets may attend the Expo on May 1-3. Responding to visitors' queries, an official from the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination said every Expo ticket holder can get one reservation ticket at the entrance to the Expo Garden from Expo staff, but Expo staff, journalists, officials and others entering the Expo Garden without an Expo ticket cannot get China Pavilion reservation tickets. The women's team consists of three competitors plus one reserve.(女隊由三名運動員和一名替補隊員組成。)

Poster of movie "The Founding of a Party"

Nearly 3 million Chinese paid to watch "The Founding of a Party," an epic film marking the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC), in the first five days of screening, the film's releaser said Wednesday.

談到epic(史詩),很多人會想到Homer’s Epic(《荷馬史詩》)。 Saving a child from icy water is really something of an epic.(從冰冷的水中救起一個小孩著實是個壯舉。)

1. Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren't used to an environment where excellence is expected. There is no shortcut to excellence. You will have to make the commitment to make excellence your priority. Use your talents, abilities, and skills in the best way possible and get ahead of others by giving that little extra. Live by a higher standard and pay attention to the details that really do make the difference. Excellence is not difficult - simply decide right now to give it your best shot - and you will be amazed with what life gives you back.

2. Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower. Innovation has no limits. The only limit is your imagination. It's time for you to begin thinking out of the box. If you are involved in a growing industry, think of ways to become more efficient; more customer friendly; and easier to do business with. If you are involved in a shrinking industry – get out of it quick and change before you become obsolete; out of work; or out of business. And remember that procrastination is not an option here. Start innovating now! The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. I've got it down to four words: "Do what you love." Seek out an occupation that gives you a sense of meaning, direction and satisfaction in life. Having a sense of purpose and striving towards goals gives life meaning, direction and satisfaction. It not only contributes to health and longevity, but also makes you feel better in difficult times. Do you jump out of bed on Monday mornings and look forward to the work week? If the answer is 'no', keep looking, you'll know when you find it. 4. You know, we don't grow most of the food we eat. We wear clothes other people make. We speak a language that other people developed. We use a mathematics that other people evolved... I mean, we're constantly taking things. It's a wonderful, ecstatic feeling to create something that puts it back in the pool of human experience and knowledge. Live in a way that is ethically responsible. Try to make a difference in this world and contribute to the higher good. You'll find it gives more meaning to your life and it's a great antidote to boredom. There is always so much to be done. And talk to others about what you are doing. Don't preach or be self-righteous, or fanatical about it, that just puts people off, but at the same time, don't be shy about setting an example, and use opportunities that arise to let others know what you are doing. 5. There's a phrase in Buddhism, 'Beginner's mind.' It's wonderful to have a beginner's mind. It is the kind of mind that can see things as they are, which step by step and in a flash can realize the original nature of everything. Beginner's mind is Zen practice in action. It is the mind that is innocent of preconceptions and expectations, judgements and prejudices. Think of beginner's mind as the mind that faces life like a small child, full of curiosity and wonder and amazement. 6. We think basically you watch television to turn your brain off, and you work on your computer when you want to turn your brain on. Reams of academic studies over the decades have amply confirmed television's pernicious mental and moral influences. And most TV watchers know that their habit is mind-numbing and wasteful, but still spend most of their time in front of that box. So turn your TV off and save some brain cells. But be cautious, you can turn your brain off by using a computer also. Try and have an intelligent conversation with someone who plays first person shooters for eight hours a day. Or auto race games, or role-playing games. 7. I'm the only person I know that's lost a quarter of a billion dollars in one year... It's very character-building. Don't equate making mistakes with being a mistake. There is no such thing as a successful person who has not failed or made mistakes, there are successful people who made mistakes and changed their lives or performance in response to them, and so got it right the next time. They viewed mistakes as warnings rather than signs of hopeless inadequacy. Never making a mistake means never living life to the full. 8. I would trade all of my technology for an afternoon with Socrates. Over the last decade, numerous books featuring lessons from historical figures have appeared on the shelves of bookstores around the world. And Socrates stands with Leonardo da Vinci, Nicholas Copernicus, Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein as a beacon of inspiration for independent thinkers. But he came first. Cicero said of Socrates that, "He called philosophy down from the skies and into the lives of men." So use Socrates' principles in your life, your work, your learning, and your relationships. It's not about Socrates, it's really about you, and how you can bring more truth, beauty and goodness into your life everyday. 9. We're here to put a dent in the universe. Otherwise why else even be here? Did you know that you have big things to accomplish in life? And did you know that those big things are getting rather dusty while you pour yourself another cup of coffee, and decide to mull things over rather than do them? We were all born with a gift to give in life, one which informs all of our desires, interests, passions and curiosities. This gift is, in fact, our purpose. And you don't need permission to decide your own purpose. No boss, teacher, parent, priest or other authority can decide this for you. Just find that unique purpose. 10. Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. Are you tired of living someone else's dream? No doubt, it's your life and you have every right to spend it in your own individual way without any hurdles or barriers from others. Give yourself a chance to nurture your creative qualities in a fear-free and pressure-free climate. Live a life that YOU choose and be your own boss. Each lesson might be difficult to integrate into your life at first, but if you ease your way into each lesson, one at a time, you'll notice an immediate improvement in your overall performance. So go ahead, give them a try.
